Rushdie might visit India for 'Midnight's Children' promotion

*Controversial author Salman Rushdie may fly down to India towards February-end to promote the film adaptation of his Booker Prize-winning novel "Midnight's Children", says the movie's director Deepa Mehta.
*
"I am sure he is coming. I was told by PVR Pictures (the movie's distributors), that he will be here for the publicity of the film a week before it opens in theatres. That will be nice," Mehta told IANS here Wednesday.

Mehta, who is based in Canada, says Rushdie describes the book as his "love letter to India", and he will be more than happy to talk about it with the people.

"He talks about the film amazingly. I sort of get shy about it, but he loves the movie, and loves talking about it. It is really sweet," said the Indo-Canadian filmmaker, who admits Rushdie is "satisfied" with the movie. Rushdie, who visited India in March this year, was earlier stopped from attending the Jaipur Literature Festival in January for the fear of protests regarding his controversial book "The Satanic Verses". But as Mehta indicates, he is excited about coming here for "Midnight's Children".

The author himself turned the 600-page book into a screenplay. "He wasn't too keen on doing it initially. He felt that since he had written the novel, I should just run with it. But with a novel, which was 600 pages long, I needed somebody, who would not get intimidated by the process of elimination," she said here.

"It was an important process to have a screenplay writer who would not be intimidated by the fact that it was a Booker Prize-winning novel... so when Salman agreed to do it, I was very relieved. "It was a great experience to work with him. Salman has an incredible sense of humour and he is also very cinematic. So, the visual style of telling the film, became something to marvel at. I had a marvellous time working with him," she added.

The release date of "Midnight's Children" is yet to be locked, but it will be released in India by PVR Pictures sometime in February 2013. Reported by Deccan Herald 2 days ago.

In the future, TœV SœD will manage the validation and verification of CDM projects from India. In its 69th meeting, the Executive Board of the UNFCCC approved the relocation of the responsible entity from Munich to Pune.

Munich/Pune. In the future, TœV SœD will manage the validation and verification of CDM projects from India. In its 69th meeting, the Executive Board of the UNFCCC approved the relocation of the responsible entity from Munich to Pune. The DOE located at TœV SœD South Asia has already started operations.

"The relocation of the Designated Operational Entity (DOE) to India marks an important step which we are taking to cater to the significance of the newly industrialized countries (NICs) and the Asia Pacific Region for the Clean Development Mechanism", says Bratin Roy, Assistant Vice President of TœV SœD South Asia in Pune. The DOE is responsible for all CDM projects worldwide that are validated and verified by TœV SœD.

TœV SœD has been engaged in the area of climate change projects for over ten years and was amongst the first companies to be accredited as Designated Operational Entity (DOE) for the CDM and as Accredited Independent Entity (AIE) for Joint Implementation (JI) projects on behalf of the UNFCCC. While the CDM applies to climate-change projects in developing and newly industrialized countries, joint implementation projects are aimed at promoting climate-change measures in industrialized countries. TœV SœD was the first ever entity to be accredited for sectoral scopes 1 to 15 of the CDM.

In recent years, TœV SœD has massively expanded its international presence, in particular continuously strengthening its position in Asia Pacific. While the accreditation for Joint Implementation will remain at TœV SœD Industrie Service GmbH in Munich, the move of CDM accreditation to India represents a further step towards the strategic goals of the international group of companies.
"Although our CDM auditors will remain located at our subsidiaries in the individual regions, the responsibility for, and management of all CDM projects will move to TœV SœD South Asia in the future", explains Dr Boris Gehring, CEO of the Industry Service Division of TœV SœD AG. The relocation of the DOE is also of great symbolic importance: "It demonstrates that we do not see India, China and other Asian countries as an 'extended workbench', but as equal partners in our global networks."

At TœV SœD, over 80 members of staff are involved in the validation and verification of climate change projects, roughly 60 of whom deal with the realization of CDM projects. Since the start of activities, the auditors have processed more than 1,600 CDM verifications and validations. In 2011, TœV SœD employed 17,000-plus staff at more than 800 locations worldwide.

i TœV SœD is an international leading technical service organization catering to the INDUSTRY, MOBILITY and CERTIFICATION Segment. The experts and technology consultants are dedicated partners in their clients' processes, offering comprehensive industry expertise throughout the entire value chain. They focus their services on their core competencies of consulting, testing, certification and training. Air India losing Rs.404 crore per month

$

* National carrier Air India suffered an average net loss of Rs.404 crore per month for the March-October period of 2012.*

This was found out when Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh Thursday reviewed the functioning of the national carrier.

An audit of the airline's books showed that the company had a cash inflow of Rs.1,348 crore per month, while the outflow due to high fuel cost was Rs.1,752 crore, leading to the cash deficit.

"Though there is an overall improvement in the performance of Air India, it is important that the revenue generated should meet the costs incurred," the minister said in a statement.

The minister asked Air India to go into minute operational details to cut the costs, including those incurred on overseas offices, salaries, fuel and office expenses.

"The minister directed to examine the necessity of deputing staff abroad for assisting Air India, embassies for ticketing, since now-a-days these facilities are available online," the statement said.

The minister asked Air India to negotiate with public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) for the same discount as they are providing to international and domestic carriers.

He directed the airline's management that of the Rs.2,000 crore which Air India is to receive next month in the form of equity under budgetary support, Rs.500 crore must be utilised to clear all arrears of the employees.

The airline's management was told to explore possibility of operating to Bali and Istanbul on the newly acquired Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Air India, which has three Dreamliners, is expecting five more by the end of the current fiscal and plans to deploy them to Sydney, Melbourne and Singapore. Reported by Deccan Herald 14 hours ago.

India, Asean finalise FTA in services

$

*India on Thursday redefined its 20-year-old relations with South East Asian nations by elevating it to a strategic partnership and pledging to add more politico-security content to it — ostensibly to respond to growing economic and military ambitions of China.*

India and the Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) also concluded an intense negotiation for Free Trade Agreements (FTA) for services and investment just before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and leaders of the 10 nations in the region met here for a summit to commemorate the two-decade-long ties between New Delhi and the bloc. The deals will create a market of almost 1.8 billion people and a combined Gross Domestic Product of $ 3.8 trillion.

Despite calls from within the Asean for India to play a role in resolution of conflicts in the region, New Delhi steered clear of Beijing's territorial dispute with Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines and Vietnam over South China Sea. India and the South East Asian nations, however, agreed to strengthen cooperation on maritime security to ensure freedom of navigation and safety of sea lanes of communication for unfettered movement of trade in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS.

"This (elevation of India-Asean ties to a strategic partnership) is a historic step, and together with the conclusion of the negotiations on FTA in Services and Investments, defines a qualitatively new paradigm of our partnership," Singh said, addressing the plenary session of the summit that New Delhi hosted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the ties. "It is a natural progression of the journey we embarked on together in 1992 and it will serve our relationship well in the next decade and beyond."

"As maritime nations, India and Asean nations should intensify their engagement for maritime security and safety, for freedom of navigation and for peaceful settlement of maritime disputes in accordance with international law," said Singh, adding: "We should also foster regional cooperation to counter piracy and respond to natural disasters."
He also underscored the need to improve connectivity, enhance commerce, promote cooperation among institutions and deepen links between people of India and South East Asia.

With the summit being held under the shadow of China's growing tension with several Asean nations over the South China Sea dispute, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung referred to the row in his speech in the plenary session of the conclave.
"I hope that India supports Asean and China in full implementation of the declaration on the conduct of parties in the South China Sea and Asean Six-Point Principle on the South China Sea in order to settle the dispute by peaceful means on the basis of international law, particularly 1992 UNCLOS," he said. India, ASEAN elevate ties to strategic partnership

*India and the 10-member ASEAN grouping, which together comprise a region of 1.8 billion people with a combined GDP of $3 trillion, Thursday elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership.*

"We declare that the ASEAN-India Partnership stands elevated to a strategic partnership," said a vision document released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit to mark 20 years of India's partnership with the major regional bloc.

"We share the vision of a peaceful, prosperous and resurgent Asia, which contributes to and promotes global peace and security," it said.

It called for "fostering greater security cooperation and information sharing" to address "traditional and non-traditional security challenges, including transnational crimes, and strengthening the effective implementation of the ASEAN-India Joint Declaration for Cooperation to Combat International Terrorism".

The two sides also promote maritime cooperation and "strengthening cooperation to ensure maritime security and freedom of navigation, and safety of sea lanes of communication for unfettered movement of trade in accordance with international law".

The two sides successfully concluded a free trade agreement in services and investments. The vision statement said the two sides were "committed to achieving a target of $100 billion for ASEAN-India trade by 2015, and also expect tariff-free lines to increase beyond the existing level in subsequent years".

It said the signing of the agreements would "facilitate further economic integration between ASEAN and India, and also contribute to the overall East Asian economic integration".

It also welcomed the efforts to strengthen cooperation in the agriculture sector and in energy as well as in working together to overcome challenges such as climate change, energy security, rapid urbanisation, natural disasters, food security, drug abuse, through both regional cooperation and participation in relevant global initiatives.
